Fishing is an addition to this setting to provide flavor as well as alternative routes for obtaining desirable items. The main selling points of fishing are obtaining valuable fish or containers, such as chests or bottles. Chests contain random, useful items, and bottles have a chance to contain spell scrolls. Fishing also has a chance for the player to hook junk or a hostile creature.

In order to fish, players need three things: A fishing pole, bait, and a body of water. The process is as follows:

  1. The players decide where to fish.
  2. Each player that decides to fish first makes an Intelligence or Wisdom check (Nature or Survival) to cast their line. The higher the result, the better items they will fish. Higher rolls greatly increase the risk of attracting unwanted attention from monsters.
  3. Once the players receive a bite, they can decide whether or not to reel the object in. Heavier objects and bigger fish will require a mightier Strength (Athletics) check. On a failure, the object is lost, and on a Critical Failure, the player is either pulled into the water or their fishing pole is plucked from their hands and whisked into the sea.
  4. On a successful strength check, the object is reeled in. Weaker characters may trade places with one another so that a stronger character can reel in a heavier object if they have one on the line.

Fishing poles also come in the magical variety, but they do not require attunement. The poles’ enchantments can range from +1 to +3, and this number is added both to the initial Wisdom check as well as the Strength check to reel an object in. Other enchantments grant advantages on either check, but particularly robust fishing poles may add the advantage to both checks.

Bait is nondescriptive, and anything used as bait in real life also functions as bait in D&D. However, certain merchants will sell enchanted bait that comes in the +1 to +3 variety. This number is only added to the Wisdom check.

The main incentive for fishing besides selling valuable catches is to find containers. Containers broadly refer to chests and bottles, which will both sometimes contain valuable and unique magic items. Bottles are unique in that they have a 33% chance to contain a single-use, random spell scroll that can be any spell in the entire game, including Wish.
